The wilderness area is comprised of the Maroon Bells mountains themselves, as well as several lakes and a variety of hiking trails criss-crossing the surrounding forest. The Maroon Bells are said to be the most photographed peaks in the United States. The spacious men's room at the trailhead parking lot features this unique sign, which points the way to a room full of urinals pictured below.

This parking lot is accessible by car only in the early morning and late evening hours. The rest of the day, it is accessible only by bus operated by the city of Aspen.
