The dam spans the border of Brazil and Paraguay on the Paraná river. Half of the plant's generators are located in each country, with two more generators, one in Brazil and one in Paraguay, coming online towards the end of 2004. The Itaipu Hydroelectric Powerplant will be eclipsed in size by the Three Gorges Dam, currently under construction in China. Itaipu, however, is still projected to generate more energy than its Chinese counterpart.
